Visits to Google Plus increased by 1269% last week. The site received 15 million U.S. visits, up from 1.1 million the week before. Google Plus went from ranking 54th in Hitwise’s Social Networking and Forums category to ranking 8th in just one week.

That’s not all the traffic, either. These stats don’t include mobile users or visits from the ubiquitous black Google toolbar. The data still show that Google Plus is disproportionately comprised of “influencers” and “early adopters” compared to other social networks, but the removal of invitations seems to have jump-started visits to the service. According to Paul Allen’s estimates, which have been on track in the past, Google Plus currently has around 43 million users.

Great Science & Tech Site

Great Science & Tech Site

5 Sci-Fi Technologies People Achieved By Hacking the Kinect | Cracked.com

5 Sci-Fi Technologies People Achieved By Hacking the Kinect | Cracked.com

Smarter Silhouettes: Smarter Tools for Smarter Commerce

Smarter Silhouettes: Smarter Tools for Smarter Commerce:
smarterplanet:

Corporate I.T. departments once passed judgment on every kind of technology used in the workplace. Employees had little choice of laptops and mobile phones. But today, because of a gradual loosening in company policies, employees have far greater say.

A survey published on Thursday by Forrester Research shed more light on the phenomenon by showing, for example, that 48 percent of information workers buy smartphones for work without considering what their I.T. department supports.

“It’s great for information workers, who buy a device based on their individual working style,” said Matt Brown, a vice president and research director at Forrester Research. “It’s a big challenge for I.T. departments.”

Kids are expensive, hitting you up for 18 years or more of food, clothing and healthcare, to say nothing of potential college expenses. As the years go by, they’re only getting more costly. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, each youngster you raise will sap $226,920 out of you by age 18. The figure is up $60,000 from 10 years ago — a 40 percent increase.

The rate at which light travels has been considered the universal speed limit for many decades, but a new discovery made by researchers at the CERN laboratory in Switzerland could throw that notion right out the window. The scientists using a massive particle detector called the Oscillation Project with Emulsion-Tracking Apparatus (OPERA) believe they have caught subatomic particles called neutrinos moving faster than light — a feat which was once considered impossible.

People are spending more time inside mobile applications on average than they are on the web, according to an analysis from Flurry, a mobile analytics firm.

Flurry measures the time people spend in apps through its own direct analytics. It got numbers for the web using public data from comScore and Alexa. The analysis is somewhat imperfect, but even if you judge it solely on a directional basis you can see mobile apps are consuming more and more time.

So what are people doing in those apps? Gaming and social networking, which absorb 79% of people’s time, according to Flurry. The rest is news, entertainment, and other apps.

CardFlick - Create & Share Business Cards [Sponsor]

CardFlick - Create & Share Business Cards [Sponsor]:
minimalmac:
